Mamma Mia Italian Restaurant
76 High St, SteyningWhat is more satisfying than a warm plate of pasta on a cold January day. Perfect location, right on the high street with cute decor. I do have high standards for Italian restaurants but this was authentic and brilliant. The penne with luganega & tomato sauce, scamorza cheese, broccoli & chilli was absolutely delicious. Service was great and prices about average. I was very impressed and highly recommend.

The Model Bakery
20 Church St, SteyningSo glad to find that good old fashioned decent bread is still made, two shops in steyning keep this alive and kicking, great bread, I would rather go there than convenient rubbish bread you get anywhere else. Well done whoever is getting up early to make this great bread, thank you, all power to your elbow!

The Castle Inn Hotel
The St, SteyningI didn't stay at the hotel. I visited the restaurant for Sunday lunch today, without having a table reserved. The staff were fantastic - helpful, friendly & efficient. I had roast lamb with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, greens & red cabbage. It arrived shortly after I had ordered & was very tasty. I followed that with dessert & coffee. It was difficult to decide which dessert to order; there were some tempting choices, like strawberries & cream mille feuille & chocolate & hazelnut cheesecake, but I settled for orange posset with shortbread biscuits. A great choice! The homemade biscuits melted in my mouth & the posset was delicious. I chose it because it was unusual. I had visited the village of Bramber because it's very pretty & there were a couple of gardens with quirky & unusual displays, so my lunch stop was a spur of the moment decision which turned out to be a good one.

Chez Joel
96 High St, SteyningWe visited for the first time today and had the full breakfast which included tea/coffee. The two ladies working were really lovely and the food was locally sourced . The sausage was excellent and piping hot (bonus as its a pet peeve to get warm food). You can buy local products including jams chutneys and cheeses. Very quant and they also do three evenings openings with a 2 or 3 course french menu. Breakfast was £9.95 and I took a piece of cherry malibu cake home.

The Model Bakery
119 High St, SteyningThe shop is very unassuming from the street..but everything in side is top quality and very reasonably priced...their sausage rolls are our favourite in the village, and the cheapest.

Fountain Ashurst
Ashurst, SteyningWe received a warm and friendly welcome and a good selection of drinks on tap. There was a great deal of choice of starters, mains and specials and in a party of six, we ate oysters, prawn cocktail, soup, pasta, steak, hamburger and fish, followed by ice cream and cheeses. There was also a fine choice of wines and we enjoyed the rose and Malbec. My main gripe was the cutlery - in this price range I would expect at least a fork for the oysters, a small spoon/fork for the prawn cocktail, a steak knife and fish knives to be presented alongside the aforementioned dishes. We were taken aback at the end of the service to see the Chef in a dirty, dark top and in a dishevelled state, albeit it had been a very busy lunchtime.

Subway
High St, Upper Beeding, SteyningFound this place whilst waiting for a bus back to Shoreham. Nicest Subway I have ever visited. Good welcome, spotless premises. I had my favourite meatball sub and a very decent cappuccino. The sub was hot and flavourful. It was so nice to discover this branch as I often go for walks in the countryside but do get hungry, and whilst a pub lunch is very nice when you have the time, this really hits the spot. The gentleman serving was friendly and kind: don’t think I have ever been asked previously in a fast food place whether I enjoyed my food and was there anything else. Will visit again soon and recommend to other walkers.

The Tollgate Restaurant Bramber
The St, SteyningWhen booking for our customary family post-Christmas lunch I was dismayed to see the change in menu and the bad reviews. However, I went ahead and was pleasantly surprised by the helpful and informative service provided by Jess and Patricia, hoping this was a good omen for our forthcoming visit. On arrival we were shown to the table we requested, and were pleased to see tasteful festive decorations around the room and charming crackers on the table. The chairs had been refreshed with new covers and everywhere looked clean and tidy. When our starters arrived, with dietary requirements noted and adhered to, we were amazed at the size of the portions and the quality of the food. Later at the carvery the chef engaged in friendly conversation with us while serving exactly what we selected from the considerable choice available. There was a wide selection of vegetables and sauces, all piping hot. We all commented on how delicious the main course was. The meats were cooked to perfection and the vegetables were tasty and tender, a great improvement on experiences in past years. Our meal was rounded off to perfection with a lovely dessert. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meal, and everyone has voted to return!!
