Old Black Horse
Main St, Mapperley, IlkestonWe recently visited The Old Black Horse at Mapperly, and it was absolutely fantastic, with excellent service and a lovely feel to the place.
This is a truly stunning country pub, delivering tasty, high quality food.
It was our first time here for dining, and we had reserved a table in the dog friendly garden room for a birthday meal. If you would prefer to eat away from dogs (why would you though?) the restaurant dining area itself doesn't allow our four legged friends inside.
The pub itself is really beautifully presented with traditional features, and the staff were so incredibly friendly and polite. We felt very welcome.
We thoroughly enjoyed some lovely cider and delicious cold beer. The house wine was great too.
The food was amazing, with generous portions that were both delicious and satisfying, really reflecting high quality. We even treated ourselves to a delicious griddle cookie for desert, which was lovely.
The outdoor spaces are a real highlight. The beautiful, well kept garden is full of stunning flowers, creating a really picturesque, relaxed setting.
There are plenty of seating areas outside, including a very comfortable smoking area with outdoor sofas!
We were particularly impressed by how incredibly dog friendly it is, especially with the pub including a dining area where our furry friends are truly welcome. Our tiny terror loved it!
Will we go back? Most definitely!

The Humble Rutland Cafe
5 Mundy St, IlkestonI don't get to come here for breakfast very often. But when I do the team do not disappoint. Veggie breakfast, perfect egg, crispy hash brown, tasty sausage, bean, tomatoes and mushrooms. Fab, with toast and coffee. Perfect on a Sat morning. Shame I do not live in the delivery area. Well done Lucy again.

128 Belper Rd, Stanley Common, IlkestonWonderful takeaway tried manlee for the first time on Halloween after trick or treating and although we don't eat much takeaway we've been back several times the owner is so friendly and tue food is perfect for us even my young daughter clears her plate I highly recommend trying manlee I even drive 15-20 minutes each way to get it because its the best Chinese takeaway we've had in a very long time and the best thing is supporting a small business because they deserve itDietary restrictions: Several signs are clearly located around the front of the store advising on allergies and dietary requirements they are happy to work you you and your needs

Nothing was too much trouble from arranging the marquee, preordering different food for our guests so everyone had what they wanted - all delicious including the carvery that a few of our guests went up for. So attentive tableside, bringing drinks out even though it was a busy Saturday with the inflatables out for the kids. Special mention to Yvonne who was disappointed not to be able to dress up as a Klingon with us. Thank you to all of the team that day for taking such good care of us and putting up with Ryans questions beforehand!! You all made our day thank you xxxxxx

This time around I had trouble ordering when it came to putting in my address,said they don't deliver here but I rang them put the order through with them and then because they only take card payments online had to go back online and the call handler has sorted out the address problem almost instantly. The handler was very polite and respectful. Five stars all round

They make lovely cakes, bread, sausage rolls with flakey pastry and shortcrust pastry, savoury rolls and much more. I would recommend a visit any time and there is a large municipal car park just a few steps away.

The food is delicious , and incredibly fresh , the staff are fantastic , the main gentleman that has served us both times he is awesome , he can’t do enough for his guests , we normal venture to Nottingham for our Indian meals but not anymore , this is our favourite place now . If you have not been before you must give them a try you will not be disappointed!

I recently had the pleasure of enjoying a traditional steak pie from Little Elf Kitchen and Cafe on Granby Street Ilkeston, and it didn’t disappoint. The pastry was golden, crisp on the top, and beautifully flaky without being dry or overworked. The real star, though, was the filling – generous chunks of tender beef, slow-cooked until meltingly soft, in a rich but not swimming in, savoury gravy that had real depth of flavour. It struck a perfect balance between seasoning and that comforting, homely feel.
I had the pie with creamy mashed potatoes, buttery peas, and a touch of gravy on the side – a classic combo that elevated the experience. This pie was packed with filling which took the pie from excellent to outstanding.
All in all, a hearty, satisfying dish that delivered on both taste and tradition. I’d happily have this meal again.

The Dales Shopping Centre, West Hallam, IlkestonWe have just moved to West Hallam and are a 4 minute walk from the West Hallam Fryer. We ordered fish and chips and then chips and a battered sausage a few weeks ago. It was hands down the best fish and chips I’ve had in AGES. We actually turned up 30 minutes before our collection time but the lovely staff made it for us early. SO lucky to have such a great chippy on our doorstep! Thank you :)

193 Awsworth Rd, Ilkestonwe recently moved to the area and we both love Chinese food. not knowing anyone to recommend anywhere, we took a chance on Jade Dragon. we've been 3 times now and I feel able to leave an honest review. each time the food has been hot, tasty, and wonderful. I've always ordered something different, the old man gets the same thing everytime. I would really recommend this restaurant/takeaway, I honestly don't think you'll be disappointed (although my brother didn't like the chips!??)

A regular portion is more than enough for 2 and we always have loads left over. Enough to feed another person!The fish portions are great too, and absolutely delicious.The kebab quality was a bit iffy a few years ago. They've really upped their game recently and their kebabs are truly gorgeous now!Unfortunately this has led them to greatly reducing the size of their kebabs. Particularly the Briggs special kebab. This is really small now compared to how it was.I wish they'd offer their chicken curry without having to have it with a portion of rice. I don't go to a chippy for rice. Hopefully the owners will see this and start offering it with chips or on its own. I'm sure it would do really well.Their fried chicken isn't great, so we go to specialist chicken takeaways for that instead.If you're after a great traditional chippy tea of fish and chips Briggs is now the best in town.

The food was OK but there are unfortunately nicer food options locally (West Hallam, Stanton Village, Smalley Cross) with lower or similar costs. Can't decide whether the good food should have been lower in cost or better in quality to match the price.
We'd happily go back but perhaps more when offers available price the food at levels better reflecting the quality of the food.

The only let down was a curry i ordered one time, which just tasted like a mixture of stuff in curry sauce. However, a brilliant establishment with very good service.

I even recommended it to another friend who visited today with her mum. She was very happy it is wheelchair friendly as her mum struggles to walk too far.

30 Wood Ln, Horsley Woodhouse, IlkestonMy mum and I went for lunch here on Wednesday. To be honest, we were a bit dubious as we had never been in. We both chose the fish and chips. It was absolutely cooked to perfection! The homemade chips were stunning and the fish was lovely and moist. What topped it off was the tartare sauce which must have been homemade! In terms of facilities , a great place for families with so much to do for the kids. The toilets were spotless ! We are definitely going to come back for more !

Food and drink were straight out in less than 15 minutes, really good quality although I have to admit portion size was a bit small but nevertheless really really good. Friendly staff in there too. Would visit again/recommend.
