Glen Rowan Cafe

Skye Road, Invermoriston

The best coffee I have had while in Scotland, I recommend it without a doubt. Some delicious toast, accompanied by exquisite salmon. Everything is very delicious, and the best thing is the people who face the public, if you come from outside do not hesitate to ask about the multiple flags on the map, discover it yourself. The haggies are delicious, by the way.

Beaufort House PIZZA

One of the reasons we returned to Fort Augustus was to revisit Beaumont House. Sam is a lovely front of house host and honestly, the pizzas are amazing. Not your usual run of the mill fare. A little Scottish flair added makes a big difference. If you’re heading this way book a table!

We had a pleasant stay at The Inch Hotel – the rooms were clean and comfortable, and the location overlooking Loch Ness is simply stunning. A special shout-out to Mukesh Kumawat in the restaurant who was incredibly attentive and made our meals more enjoyable with his warm service. The Scottish breakfast, while neat and well-presented, was just about average—nothing extraordinary. One minor drawback: the rooms felt a bit stuffy in the summer heat and could benefit from better ventilation. Overall, it’s a lovely historic lodge with great staff, beautiful views, and a tidy stay—just wish the rooms were a little fresher.

Canalside Fish & Chip Shop

Canal Side, Fort Augustus

Probably one of the most reasonably priced chippies in The Highlands. Less than £10 for fish 'n' chips. Less than £4 for chips. It was cooked fresh to order so it was piping hot. It is a takeaway so there aren't any seats, but just across from it on the canal bank there are tables and benches. Fort Augustus is definitely a touristy place, and sits at the southern end of Loch Ness. The Caledonian canal meets up with the Loch, Very picturesque and worth a trip if you're in the area.

The Lock Inn

Canal Side, Fort Augustus

On a crisp afternoon in Scotland, I found myself in a cozy pub nestled in a quaint village. The warm, inviting atmosphere was filled with the sounds of clinking glasses and lively chatter. The wooden beams and tartan decor added to the charm, making it a perfect spot for a traditional meal.

When the waiter brought out my plate, I was immediately struck by the golden, crispy batter enveloping the flaky white fish. The fish was perfectly cooked—moist and tender inside, with a satisfying crunch on the outside. Accompanying the fish were thick-cut chips, also golden and crisp, seasoned just right. A side of tartar sauce and a wedge of lemon completed the plate, offering a zesty contrast to the richness of the fish.

Each bite was a delightful blend of flavors and textures. The batter was light yet hearty, while the chips were fluffy and comforting. It was easy to see why this dish is a beloved staple in Scottish cuisine.

This dining experience was not just about the food and drink; it was about enjoying a slice of Scottish culture. The combination of fish and chips with a well-crafted beer made for an unforgettable lunch. As I savored the last bites, I felt a deep appreciation for the simple yet profound joys of good food and drink in a welcoming setting.
