Sakura Kitchen
32 Laverock Rd, KirkwallWent twice in one week. Both times the food was great. A lovely, healthy, and tasty alternative to the other offerings in Kirkwall. Quite a small menu but enough for repeat visits. The dish came with an interesting variety of components to make it both a taste and visual delight. Highly recommend.

Helgi's
14 Harbour St, KirkwallWe visited Helgi’s for some traditional Scottish pub food. The haggis fries were the standout, rich and flavorful. The haggis burger was hearty, and the fish and chips were fresh and crisp. They also offered homemade desserts for takeaway, which was great! The beer selection was to be expected, with enough variety. The atmosphere was comfortable, albeit a little plain, again as expected in a sleepy harbour town in Orkney. Overall, Helgi’s is a solid choice in Kirkwall with excellent haggis fries and solid dishes.

The Sands Bar & Restaurant
Burray, OrkneyWe were touring the bottom of Orkney last Sunday and needed somewhere for lunch. I picked this place due to both being near where we were and the rating. When we got there, they were fully booked but managed to find us a table in the corner. The food quality was excellent. I especially liked the soup. The atmosphere is also really pleasant. The staff were excellent and attentive and it was excellent value for money. I would certainly recommend here for lunch, but on a Sunday you need to book.

SunBean Coffee House
35 Victoria St, KirkwallFriendly baristas, great coffee, and an amazing ICED AMERICANO. Do make sure you order the ICED AMERICANO. It’s an off-menu specialty that they love to make. No one else on the island makes ICED AMERICANOS apparently, but they make them very well here. Again, that’s an ICED AMERICANO. Delicious.

St Magnus Community Cafe
KirkwallThis place is cheap and has an old school British cafe vibe that’s so relaxed and pleasant compared to other, fancier places in town. I come here every week while waiting for an appointment, and I’ve got to know a few of the staff by sight and they’re just solid gold. The place is usually pretty busy, especially in the summer, but they just plow through the queue with cheerfulness and efficiency. I watched a young lady (who I haven’t seen much so maybe she’s new) explaining almost every item on the menu to a non-English speaking family, and as someone who works in tourism it was honestly a masterclass in patience and kindness. I couldn’t have done it better. There’s another particular member of staff who I’ve twice seen run out from behind the counter to carry a tray to a table for an older lady with a walking frame. The lady probably could have managed it, but she didn’t have to struggle because the lady anticipated her need and offered without being condescending. It was lovely. And then she apologised when she came back for making us wait for all of twelve seconds. Just fab staff all round, I can’t say enough nice things. I hope they read this.
Also whoever does the baking, 10/10. Had the best scone today.

Happy Haddock
65 Junction Rd, KirkwallGreat chippy that was open on a sunday unlike the other one that said it was. Gorgeous fish and very reasonably priced. Very busy so a bit of a wait. Portions were big and it was all very tasty. My only criticism was that the curry sauce wasn't the best but otherwise, I couldn't fault it.

7 Bridge St, KirkwallThe best curry we have had for ages. My veggie korma was wonderfully tasty, not remotely bland as some can be. My husband loved his chicken madras, said it was perfect. We had to rush to catch the ferry but this wasn’t a problem. Great, friendly service. Enough food for two days! Thank you.
