Welcome Stranger
Truro Rd, Lanivet, BodminWhat a find!\n\nThe Welcome Stranger is a fish and chip shop/restaurant in the village of Lanivet, near Bodmin. It was recommended to us by the campsite (Mena Farm) we were staying at.\n\nWe got there quite late in the evening, around 7:15pm, and was a bit hesitant if we could eat in the restaurant or if they were only doing take-away, as they were closing at 8pm. I needn't have worried... a nice warm welcome and offered a table. Placed an order for 2 specials (fish, chips, bread & butter, side dish [mushy peas for us] and coffees) which were served very quickly.\n\nQuality was first class... arguably the nicest fish and chips I've had (we did go to another fish and chip place the next day elsewhere whilst travelling home and they were good too).\n\nVery generous portion of cod, batter was just right - light, not greasy or oily - good portion of chips - again cooked just right. Absolutely spot on.\n\nIf you want good fish and chips, and you're near Bodmin - this is where you want to come!

Lucky House
60 Fore St, BodminFood is nice and portions are generous. Only negative for me is using tiny noodles for chow mein and no beansprouts, not like a chow mein at all (or what I'm used to anyway) so that was disappointing as ordered a second time thinking it might be a one off

Morrisons Cafe
Priory Rd, BodminHad a lovely stop with the family on our way home from holiday. Amazing value. The staff were lovely and engaged really nicely with the children. Everything on the menu was available even after 5pm. My youngest loves scrambled egg and doesn’t eat much else and they gave her extra which we were so grateful for as it fills her up. The salads were fresh. Large fish was served nice and hot. We sat by the large window and the sun was shining through from the carpark. There are lots of trees outside which makes it a nice setting. Couldn’t ask for more. Thank you.

Callywith Table Table
Launceston Rd, BodminMy partner and I arrived at 6:30 pm this evening for a rare meal out as a young couple. Although the wait time for a waitress was a little long once seated, we were greeted by Sharon who was warm, friendly, bubbly and cheerful. Exactly what you want in a hostess. Sharon took our drink and food orders and got our drinks to us as soon as she could. Although she seemed to have little to no help from the other staff working on the floor. Any problems that we had Sharon worked her hardest and sorted it for us quickly and efficiently. We had an hours wait for our food to come to the table and people who had arrived at the same time as us had eaten and gone before we were served. When the food arrived it was not what we had ordered, upgraded meals were served as standard. We mentioned this to Sharon and she sorted it out in no time and brought the missing food items to us. We cannot thank Sharon enough for her help and understanding this evening, even honouring the pricing on our menu which was an old menu that had not been removed when the prices had been upped! 10/10 Service from Sharon.

McDonald's
Bodmin Retail Park, Launceston Rd, BodminAs a traveler, this is a convenient stop for me to charge my car, and I always order ahead on the app to save time. However, the service speed is a real gamble. Sometimes my order is ready almost instantly, but on other occasions, I've waited more than 10 minutes. While I can see the drive-thru is always busy, the inconsistency for app orders is frustrating.

The Tavern
70A Fore St, BodminI stumbled across The Tavern in Bodmin almost by accident, and what a find it turned out to be. This cosy little pub is run by a warm and welcoming Portuguese family who have brought a slice of their culinary tradition right into the heart of Cornwall. From the moment you step inside, you get a sense of genuine hospitality — the kind of place where you feel like a guest in someone’s home rather than just another customer.
The food is centred around Portuguese tapas, and every dish we tried was just packed with flavour. There’s something so satisfying about small plates done properly — fresh ingredients, simple but thoughtful preparation, and that unmistakable Portuguese flair for seasoning. Each plate felt like a little discovery, and together they built into a meal that was vibrant, comforting, and delicious.
But the absolute standout for me was their take on the traditional sandwich — I believe it’s called a francesinha. Describing it as a sandwich doesn’t quite do it justice: it’s layered, rich, drenched in sauce, and honestly one of the most ridiculously delicious things I’ve eaten in a long time. It’s indulgent in the best possible way and the sort of dish you’d come back for again and again.
What makes The Tavern so special isn’t just the food, though — it’s the atmosphere. There’s a relaxed, unpretentious charm, and you can really feel the pride the family has in sharing their heritage. It’s the kind of pub you’d happily linger in for an evening with friends, enjoying good food, good wine, and a sense of community.
All in all, The Tavern is a gem. Bodmin is lucky to have it, and I would absolutely come back — in fact, I’m already looking forward to my next visit. If you’re in Cornwall and want to try something a bit different from the usual pub fare, this is a spot well worth seeking out.

Coby’s Coffee Shop
Sunny Bank, BodminWell, what to say first. Simply a great place to go, wasn't the easiest place to find the first time I went there, but well worth it. The owner and staff are so very helpful and happy to see you. Haven't eaten much there, but what I've had was good. The café is upstairs, but if needed there is a stair lift. The place is very Art orientated, with an array of paints and brushes, framing , pictures, cards and more. There is plenty of parking, and seating inside and out. Very picturesque with dog walking close by. I could go on, but I think I will leave you to explore yourself.

2 miles from, Pendoggett, Port IsaacWith so many local places closed down for the winter it was a relief to find a pub open and serving food. It was a bonus to find an initiative in place offering reduced food on a Thursday, though I don’t know how long this initiative will be running for.
