The Estuary Bistro
Main St, Grange-over-SandsMy wife, 10 year old son and I ate in the Estuary on Saturday evening. The staff were so busy, yet so extremely good with their service. The guys spent time, chatting with our son, we cant praise them enough. I have got to say, that food was the best we have had in a very long time, all fresh, locally sourced and cooked to perfection!
Thanks to everyone at the Estuary Bistro, for providing a first class service, to my family and I.

L'Enclume
Cavendish St, Cartmel, Grange-over-SandsGiving it 5 but still unsure.
As per any restaurant at this level the ingredients - locally sourced at Rogans farm - were fresh, colourful and expertly dealt with. But those flavours were not unmatched by lesser restaurants.
Couldn’t get past the feeling it was pushing too hard with the 15 odds courses. Obviously individually great but felt like it didn’t lead to a ‘wow’ dish. Felt like a production line to showcase technical skill and fresh ingredients.
Perhaps became overwhelmed by the number of dishes. Perhaps expected too much which is unfair.
Wine pairings were good. Good touch is that staff explain when a pairing is to cover two courses when it’s not obvious.
Staff were good for a busy restaurant, dealing with numerous dishes for numerous customers. Interactions were helpful and pleasant.
It feels like I’m being harsh. But with awards comes a cost in terms of expectations and money. And to be consistent, which it was, must bring pressure.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s a great experience and I’m glad we tried it.
To us, it’s a special occasion restaurant which will do you well.

Amber Court
Main St, Grange-over-SandsWe have eaten here many times over the past 20 years and more. We have always had great tasting, well prepared food. We have been to many Chinese restaurants and although this is not necessarily the best we have been to, it is much better than a lot of others in the quality and taste of the food. The service varies depending on who is on shift. In the last couple of years an older man (owner?) has often been there, and he is extremely miserable, not very welcoming. On the other hand the woman is always pleasant and remembers us each time we go in. Takeaway trade seems to have increased greatly, lowering the ambience of the place. Less people eat in the restaurant these days. Its only been decorated and had a new carpet once in all these years. The decor could be better, with a more modern feel. However, the tables are spotless with their damask tablecloths changed between customers. Not somewhere we would go every week, but a place to go occasionally and especially when family are visiting.

Rogan and Co
Devonshire House, Devonshire Square, Cartmel, Grange-over-SandsWe had a wonderful lunch at Rogan&Co the other day, choosing the Set Lunch Menu. The food was excellent.
The mushroom on rye cracker snack to start with was delicious. Problem with an amuse bouche is that it’s designed to be a single mouth full. We were very sad when it was gone and would have happily paid extra to get another one each. So yum!! The bread and butter is light fluffy carb heaven. The kale started wasn’t either of our favourites, but was still interesting and nicely cooked. We shared both mains, and ate probably the technically best cooked chicken either of us has ever eaten and a carrot purée we’ll both think about for a long time, but for me the vegetarian main (Ibis celeriac) won out. So very tasty! The desert was very nice, and managed to feel indulgent, yet light, which is what you need at the end of a hearty lunch.
I’ve seen many reviews complaining about small portions, but I couldn’t disagree more. Neither of us had eaten any breakfast as we didn’t want to be too full to enjoy this lunch, and we left the restaurant very well fed, without feeling uncomfortably stuffed, which allowed us to actually enjoy our experience, and feel good about the money we had just spent on this delicious food, rather than regretting all of our life choices, because we’d eaten way too much.
We tried all 3 mocktails available, and while we definitely had a favourite (the rosemary one, hands down!) they were all really fun and interesting, and I very much appreciated that they cost £8/£9/£10, as often you go somewhere where your cocktails cost £18-£20 and your mocktails £15, which always seems insulting. They also offered alcohol free G&Ts for £6.50, another thing I very much appreciated.
We were a little bemused by the ever changing servers (being greeted, brought to our tables, offered water, brought and explained the menus, and having our order taken was done by 5 different members of staff) and glad when after the initial flurry we seemed to settle into mostly having one main server, and he was absolutely lovely! They all were, but it’s a LOT of social interaction trying to keep track off and make small talk with all 8 staff members on the restaurant floor at any given time, because any of them could approach you at any moment!, rather than just having to pay attention to 1 person. All around I would say the service was great, but for me personally a little too much. I am perfectly happy filling up my own water glass and for my napkin to remain unfolded when I go to the toilet. However I do appreciate that this is part of the style, so I can overlook it.
All around, we had a lovely afternoon. While £50 a person for food isn’t something we can spend on lunch every week, we felt the price was pitched perfectly and that we received exactly the level of food that we were expecting for that money, and will very happily come back in the future!!

Masons Arms, Strawberry Bank
Strawberry Bank, Grange-over-SandsWe recently stayed here for a 50th wedding anniversary celebration. It couldn't have been more perfect, from the location with its breathtaking views, friendly staff, warm atmosphere, great food and drinks and especially the fact they make dogs so welcome too. The rooms were beautiful, clean and just a joy to be in.
The waitress blew my mind by remembering all of our meal orders (8 in total) for dinner without writing it down! The food was absolutely delicious, cooked to perfection.
In the morning we had breakfast which was gorgeous. A selection of cereals, croissants, juices and then a cooked breakfast. We had 2 dogs with us and they were given the option to have a sausage for breakfast, which was cut up and in a bowl each.
All in all a perfect get away. We would all highly recommend visiting, especially for a nights stay.
Thank you team, we will be back!

Aulis Cartmel
Cavendish St, Cartmel, Grange-over-SandsThis was my first time visiting at a 3-star Michelin restaurant as well as eating at the Chef's table.
Firstly, from now on I will definitely attempt to do the Chef's table experience at a restaurant when it is available. It is a much more entertaining affair, and more interesting and informative experience than your traditional restaurant experience. Whilst preparing each of the individual and unique courses, the chef clearly explained the inspiration/ingredients behind each course. He also shared how L'enclume are trying to be more sustainable and how Simon Rogan has his own farm nearby in Cartamel to source fresh local produce for the restaurant.
The chefs table experience also allows you to speak to other groups of people present and share their experience and why they are there and their opinions. It's a great experience for foodies and highly recommended.
For l'enclume and Aulis Cartamel , the food is great, organic, beautifully presented and expertly prepared. My personal favourite is the Orkney Scallops and Corra lim pudding caramelised in Birch sap. This restaurant is a true English restaurant, that is worth 3 stars.

Cartmel Drinkshop & Wine Snug & Oscar’s
5a, Unsworths Yd, Ford Rd, Cartmel, Grange-over-SandsOscars did not disappoint. Beautiful setting in quintessential Cartmel. We booked for our son’s 17th birthday. David the owner greeted us with a smile and hoped the birthday napkins were correct (mentioned online when we booked ?). Sat upstairs, lovely atmosphere and quirky decor. Made to feel very welcome.
Very good Unsworth ale?
Small plate menu, delicious, had two plates each so six in total. Followed by homemade Bischoff cheesecake and the best chocolate brownie in the world (both with cream and ice cream). Shout out to Kelly the chef, David her husband who made us very welcome and their daughter Lydia who served us. Our 17 year old loved it!!
We’ll be back!!
