Taylors
22 Market St, TavistockI booked 15 guests into the lunch time slot a few months ago with Sarah, as the organiser I want to congratulate the whole team. It was flawless. The special offer of two courses for £20 was very good value. Everyone who had meat commented how tender and tasty this was. My nut roast was very nice with a lovely flavour. Our waitress Angel was organised and extremely helpful to everyone. Well done.

Pet Friendly Places

Peter Tavy Inn
Peter Tavy, TavistockWe went in October 2024 for lunch with family.
The Peter Tavy is a very popular pub on the edge of Dartmoor, and known for its ambience and excellent food. It's an old Inn and was complete with low ceilings, fireplaces, and wooden beams . We'd booked a table as we know it can be busy, and the team at the pub were expecting us.
For myself, I had the Ham, Egg and Chips, and I can honestly say that it was the best ham I have ever been served in a pub, and I don't normally heap praise like that easily. The eggs were good, too, as were the chips. I also had a couple of pints of Tavistock Golden Ale, which is brewed locally and is a really good, bitter, beer. I live in Canada and miss a good English pint, so the Golden Ale was real high point my fortnight in the UK.
The service was excellent; fast and efficient with very friendly staff.
I can't speak to prices as the meal was paid for us, but I believe the bill was quite reasonable.
The pub is a little off the beaten track (you get to it seemingly through a farm yard), but it's well worth the effort.

Karen's Restaurant
42 Brook St, TavistockWe popped into Tavistock on our way to holiday let and were very amused to see a cafe sharing my name? Lovely to see such a good menu selection with some traditional choices. I had cottage pie, chips and peas, hubby had vegetable sausage baguette with chips, all really delicious and, hurray, a place where food is not served on stone cold plates. Would have loved a dessert but too full. The place was very busy and the two young girls serving were courteous and friendly, advising customers at the door of a wait for food, good to be forewarned. Will definitely return when next in the area.

King Street Bakery
2 King St, TavistockBy far the best bakery in Tavistock but it's a secret that only true local Tavy people know about. Pasties are off the scale and nearly make up for the fact that technically they're meat parcels as not from Cornwall.Best meal deal in the world that includes a large pasty, Burts crisps and a can of fizzy pop for a £5.

TJ's & LJ's Fish and Chips
36 Brook St, TavistockWe decided upon fish and chips after walking around Tavistock today, Cod was freshly cooked and flakey 'n' crispy as it should be, chips were pretty good too, the medium portions were a good size so we couldn't manage all of our chips, nice friendly staff in the shop. Not the cheapest fish and chips but they were excellent! We all know what fish and chips look like so popped a couple of old buildings in Tavistock up.

Dukes Coffee House
8-11 Market Rd, TavistockWe had a nice stop here on our way back east from the south coast of Cornwall. The breakfasts were quick to be brought out and hit the spot. I had a summer special iced tea which was really tasty. I would say the coffee wasn’t strong, and expected more from a “coffee house”, but still a delightful little stop off, with public toilets nearby and a good sized market to peruse.

The Horn of Plenty
B3362, TavistockWe were originally supposed to have our wedding here in 2020 but due to COVID this didn't happen. However we have been there twice since and it's a great place for a two-night break for a couple to get away from the buzz of a city. We had dinner on both nights including the tasting menu one evening, and by the end of it, we were perfectly full. All the staff from reception, the restaurant, maintenance to housekeeping seemed cheery and helpful.
This last week we had our baby with us. I wouldn't necessarily suggest bringing very young children here as it feels the environment is better suited for a couple's get-away, however we didn't have a choice, and we felt very warmly welcomed by everyone.
Also great to have EV charging (16A limit; not usually a problem but worth being aware of for planning) on site!
