Good Thai food at a reasonable price, especially given its central Rochester location, the high quality interior design, and the attention paid to food presentation.

Whilst the menu is a fairly comprehensive selection of all the usual 'British Thai' fare, we were impressed that the dishes we had (especially starters) that are often served in other restaurants as-is from Thai supermarkets, were actually home-made here.

Everything was fresh and tasty, and things like the king prawns in the soups were not overcooked, as again so often happens elsewhere.

...tried to go back since, but fully booked tonight; whilst reading up online this isn't unusual, so book early!

Absolutely amazing experience the bacon burger, the black spicy burger and a third I can’t remember the name of were phenomenal, it’s not the cheapest considering chips are extra but WELL worth the money,
The white chocolate cheesecake is to die for and definitely the best cheesecake I’ve ever had, so rich and chocolatey but not sickly

**Warning: this is a longer review, but the food deserved more than “nice food, would recommend”.**

Five stars first: the food quality, taste and service at Fish at 55 were fantastic, the crew were friendly, and we will definitely come back.

I went with my 10 and 12 year old boys, who love sushi but had mostly only tried salmon and tuna so far. I wanted to broaden their sushi experience a little, and Fish at 55 seemed like the perfect place.

We started with six Colchester Rock oysters, which were excellent. Fresh, clean, beautifully served, and I don’t think I found a single piece of shell. Even better, my boys refused to try them, so I had all six myself. A tragic parental sacrifice, but someone had to do it.

We also had the pan-seared scallops with pea velouté and crispy chorizo, and the braised octopus in red wine sauce. My boys were very sceptical at first, but after tasting them I had to fight hard to get even one piece back. Both dishes were absolutely fantastic and perfectly seasoned. The sourdough bread was also very good.

Then we ordered the Chef’s Sushi Selection platter for four people, because we were hungry. It arrived beautifully presented on the wooden boat, but it looked more like a platter for two. The rolls and sashimi came as four pieces each, but the nigiri only came as two pieces per variety, which does not really work for a sharing platter for four. Ideally, everyone should be able to try each type.

I mentioned this politely to our very friendly waitress. She quickly spoke to her boss and said they would bring the missing pieces free of charge. I expected maybe five extra pieces. About ten minutes later, they arrived with roughly 25 pieces. At that point the sushi boat had become a sushi rescue mission. We managed to eat it all, but the last pieces were hard work. Very delicious hard work.

The sushi quality itself was excellent: fresh, well made, beautifully presented, and my boys were very happy. My only real criticism is the structure of the platter. If the restaurant offers unagi/eel, I think it really should appear on the chef’s platter, because it is one of the most interesting pieces for people exploring beyond salmon and tuna.

My main suggestion would be to make the Chef’s Sushi Selection platter a little more generous and better balanced, especially with the nigiri. If it is offered for four people, each person should ideally be able to try each nigiri variety. I would also definitely include the unagi/eel, because that is one of the most interesting and memorable sushi pieces for anyone moving beyond the usual salmon and tuna (So, add 14 nigiri in total). Personally, I would rather pay a bit more and get a fuller, more complete sushi experience. The quality is absolutely good enough to justify a higher price, and the presentation already feels special enough for a more ambitious platter.

As someone who lived in Tokyo for several years, I would also love to see Fish at 55 go even further with its sushi selection. A few gunkan and temaki would immediately make the platter more varied and more exciting. Otoro would add a proper luxury element, while ikura served as gunkan would give guests a completely different texture and flavour experience. Ika and tako would bring in the classic squid and octopus textures that are such an important part of sushi. Hotate would be a beautiful premium addition, and for a stronger, more traditional note, iwashi or seared katsuo tataki could work very well. A small kani salad would also fit nicely into a larger specialist selection. And then, for the brave and curious, uni as gunkan would certainly get the table talking. Not everyone will love it, but that is half the fun of a real tasting platter.

Overall, we had a fantastic evening.

Absolutely fantastic venue! Honestly, so good, on every front. From outside it’s easy to miss, but inside it’s quite labyrinthine with a massive and varied amount of games to play and two floors (upstairs warmer, lighter and a bit noisier with more children) and downstairs maybe more adult- friendly. The cocktail menu is really vast and creative and everything I’ve tried is delicious. Even if you didn’t want get involved in games - the cocktails are amazing and such good value! It’s quite Roald Dahl in here in terms of fun, and sweeties and “what fun will I have next?”. Not eaten here yet but seen others indulge in humongous, delicious looking hotdogs. Vegan/veggie menu is impressive and loads of desserts and snacks too. The time will fly by in here so highly recommend. Friendly, helpful and patient staff. Love it!

Stayed here with my partner after a wedding at Cooling Castle Barn. Staff were super friendly and really accommodating - I'm vegan and they were more than helpful, giving me breakfast options and oat milk. Great coffee! (They even gave me some to take home!)

The room was everything you hope for, clean, simple and modern, great shower. Teas/ coffees/biscuits in the room etc. Small but they've done it very nicely. Lots of board games in the pub

Its a lovely place. Appreciate they source in the main local suppliers. The welcome was good. Quick to take us to our table. Cocktails were lovely. Menu is on point and we all found something to enjoy. Plus was service...ingrediants top noche. 2 small issues was my hispi cabbage tasted great...but it was borderline tepid. We ordered floater coffees...over sugared and too sweet. Overall great quality and worth another visit.

A Large premises with around ten tables inside. Outside the premises, two tables are available.
The whole place is clean and tidy. Toilets are available, which are very clean indeed and obviously well maintained/cleaned often.

The Table I sat at was super frictionless my plate kept spinning while I tried to eat my meal… my napkin placed under my Plate resolved this issue.
I ordered a Traditional Breakfast, sadly my Chips were cold, barely warm at all and my Baked beans were completely cold. However the Sausages, Bacon and Eggs were hot and overall my Breakfast was very tasty and enjoyable. I paid Nine pounds for my breakfast, that came with a hot drink and a choice of bread & butter or toast.

The Staff inside were friendly and polite. You can pay with cash or card.
There’s music playing in the background. Nice and relaxing…

A Special mention to the Book shelves filled with Books! A Novel idea…

I would have gave Five Stars if all of my Breakfast was hot. Hopefully if I return in the future this issue would not be the case.

Definitely a nice, relaxing place to visit and eat at. A tasty value for money meal.

We celebrated my brother’s 30th birthday at Padrinos, and the team couldn’t have been more attentive or friendly. Despite a huge crowd gathered around the bar (making it tricky for them to even get pizzas to other tables!), the staff kept smiling and never let it faze them.

They handled our big group of 15 brilliantly - taking countless drink orders, accepting last-minute additions to the food, and making sure everything arrived smoothly. When it came to the birthday cake, they were more than happy to serve it up (with the vanilla ice cream we politely ordered on the side), which made the celebration extra special.

The atmosphere was lively but welcoming, and there was plenty of fun for the little ones too. All in all, the service made the evening feel easy and enjoyable, which is no small feat with such a large party. A huge thank you to the Padrinos team for helping make my brother’s milestone birthday so memorable!

We've just had a takeaway from this restaurant - about 8 dishes. Every single one of them was delicious! I heard about this place via a friend and just had to go and try out the selection of beer and food. What a find this gem is! The one beer is tried was out of this world ( i will definitely be visiting to try more of the selection ) and the food, oh my God it was amazing! The picture really does do it justice! A real hidden gem. Visited for the first time this weekend - the food was delicious and very generous portions. There was a slight delay between receiving the main dish and side orders, but the chef personally came out to apologise and explained that they were very short staffed that evening (the place was fully booked).
