The Herbalist Rooms

Keith was incredibly helpful and responsive! He made sure I had the app and that I understood the instructions and access codes. The rooms are quite central with easy access to most main shops in the area.
Our room was rather small but very clean; there were clean towels and some small toiletries.

Some cons are:
- thin walls (we were in room 11 and could hear noise from room 13 very clearly)
- a strange green light was lit on the ceiling and we had to cover this up as it was too bright with the lights off
- the window is next to the main street, so traffic was very audible by the early morning
- shared bathrooms - not ideal
- no blackout blinds, so the room was bright by early morning
- very basic toiletries (no hairdryer, etc)

Everytime ive ordered the food has been amazing. Me and missus regularly order their noodle boxes. I have hot box missus has combo box. This along with a sauce of choice is a gorgeous meal each. Highly Recommend. 5star. Never had a issue to comment but the staff every time i have made a mistake, or ive needed to change anything or by chance collected instead of delivery! The staff have been brilliant helpful and attentative. Thank you for a lovely meal each time. Please ignore belows negative comment the place is full of well wiped clean stainless steel surfaces. It is a working kitchen so expect the odd bit of mess. But cmon ive been in a few times and each time not messy at all so have no idea where the below post is referring too... or is it a spam reviewer or sabotager judging by not using full name or a name at all.... highly recommend so please give this place a try...

They are consistent in that if you order more than once you get the same quality, many other local spots quality depends on the tide and if its a full moon. They have reasonable offers to help with the price. staff seem ok considering they have to deal with local scroats on a daily basis.

On Mother's Day, we dined as a group of four, and it was an exceptional experience! We made a last-minute reservation and were quickly informed that a table was available for us. Thank you for your warm hospitality! I must say, this place is truly a hidden gem in Retford. It was my first visit, and I absolutely adored the ambiance, especially with the delightful live singer adding to the atmosphere. We will definitely return and highly recommend it to others!

Absolutely lovely food!! Only thing that stops it from being a full 5 stars for it all is with the Caesar salad, maybe we got it on an off day but just found the Caesar dressing was rather watered down, possible from the salad being washed too recently and dressing doesn’t stick to wet lettuce, so didn’t really taste any of the dressing, but outside of that was lovely!!
All staff were lovely, would come again, thank you!

What a fabulous little place !! We only stopped for a quick drink, late afternoon, so can't comment on evenings here, but we loved the place. Great selection of real ales, which apparently changes on a regular basis. Just sandwiches/light bites for food. Great decor. Friendly bar chap. Tucked away just at the back of the market square, so plenty of town carparks nearby. Will most definitely visit again.

Lovely Afternoon tea however attention needeto surrounding areas and cleaning. We were upstairs and felt that we were in a store room. Poker table lying on its side crumbs all over the floor coushions piled in the corner.. Glass partition needed cleaning also piping and widowsill very badly need dusting and covered in dead flies/insects.

Staff were amazing, so friendly I didn’t get the main lady’s name but she had a pink top on and was great with us! The food was delicious, credit to the chefs! We had such a lovely experience at The Gate Inn, Sutton cum Lound! The team made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived — amazing service, great atmosphere, and even better food. The Sunday roast was next level (huge portions and so delicious!), and the steak and ale pie was proper comfort food at its best. We couldn’t resist trying dessert too — the sticky toffee pudding was an absolute dream! The Gate is such a cosy, friendly spot — perfect whether you’re after a relaxed meal, a few drinks, or somewhere to celebrate with friends and family. Definitely one of our new favourites! Highly recommend if you’re looking for great food, fab service, and a lovely atmosphere. We’ll be back for sure!
