Restaurants in Isle of Islay
Laphroaig Distillery
Laphroaig, Isle of IslayDid the grain to glass experience and man has Susan set the bar high for any future tours! We had a fantastic time learning the history of Laphroig, whiskey on Islay and the process then and now. Not only was it educational and a true experience but Susan made the morning fly by with her stories, quips and overall attitude. Cannot recommend it more!

Bruichladdich Distillery
Bruichladdich, Distillery, Isle of IslayJust pitched up at the tasting room with my dad, no need to book a tour or tasting. Free poured us free drams of 6 or 7 whiskies, all fantastic. Tried the Octomore too (super heavily peated) which is a must!
No food, coffee/tea or soft drinks. Didn’t bother us, but some distilleries have them and some don’t!

Bowmore Distillery
School St, Bowmore, Isle of IslayHistoric, atmospheric, and beautifully balanced — a classic Islay experience
Visiting Bowmore Distillery is like stepping into whisky history. As the oldest licensed distillery on Islay (established in 1779!), it offers an authentic and atmospheric experience right in the heart of Bowmore village, with stunning views over Loch Indaal.
Bowmore’s whisky is beautifully balanced — a gentler, more elegant take on Islay peat. The 12 Year Old is a classic, while expressions like the 15 Year Darkest and various limited editions showcase deeper sherry influence and complexity.
The visitor centre is well designed, and the shop has a great selection — including distillery exclusives that are well worth picking up.
Bowmore is a must for any whisky lover — not just for the quality of the spirit, but for the deep sense of place and tradition. A timeless distillery with a truly special experience.

Bowmore Hotel Restaurant
Jamieson St, Bowmore, of IslayTryed here on a whim. A fantastic place and very welcoming. Popped our heads through the door on a Sunday evening so had a late Sunday dinner. Food is beautiful and genuine.
One of the most extensive whisky menus I have ever seen. A gargantuan selection of Islay whiskys. From basic core range to very very limited release bottles. The ability to do a horizontal tasting of different whiskys from a distillery, or a vertical tasting of the same whisky through different variations and years of its production.
Couldn't have a drink myself as I had to drive but very kindly had the opportunity to take it away as a drivers dram.

The Ardview Inn
67 Frederick Cres, Port Ellen, Isle of IslayFriendly well frequented bar mixing locals and tourists. I didn't have any food (there wasn't any on offer) but the service was fast and efficient and the atmosphere was good even if Scotland was losing at home to Iceland on the TV.

The Old Kiln Cafe
Ardbeg, Isle of IslayFood was well made and very tasty. I had the Steak and Ale pie which came with onion mashed potatoes and fresh veggies. They let us stay at our table in the cafe and taste whiskey which was really convenient for our party of 6.

Ballygrant Inn
Ballygrant, Isle of IslayVery impressive unique structure. Interesting tour sailing into the wheel, being lifted to the higher level, cruising through a tunnel that goes under a Roman fort and back again. Visitor centre good. It was clean, well organised and the cafe had tasty food and various drinks. A very enjoyable experience.

Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant
Shore St, Bowmore, Isle of IslayWe ate 2 nights here the food was absolutely delious and the service was friendly would recommend we were the only people using the restaurant but they were very busy with continual take away orders. I would say an update of decor in restaurant and an alcohol licence might encourage more to use it, but don't let it put you off
