The Blue Bell
Bell Ln, Cocking, MidhurstThe day actually started badly. The missus hit a pothole on the way to work and burst a tyre, leaving her stranded on a busy road. After a few phone calls to the RAC and a local garage we managed to get the car recovered and dropped off at a garage in Cocking, conveniently right opposite The Blue Bell.
Two hours later the car was safely in their yard with a replacement tyre on the way, but they couldn’t guarantee when it would be ready, so they suggested leaving it overnight and picking it up in the morning.
Which meant I was summoned to collect the missus.
By this point it was lunchtime, and as we were already standing outside a pub it seemed rude not to go in. About thirty minutes after leaving the house I was sitting opposite her at a table with a menu in my hand, which was quite the improvement on the morning we’d been having.
It was only lunch time so we kept things fairly light. We ordered a couple of sandwiches, some lemonade and a portion of chilli fries to share.
The pub itself is an absolute gem.
Most of the other tables were filled with very well turned out local ladies enjoying lunch and a chat. It clearly doubles as a bit of a community hub, the sort of place where everyone seems to know each other and nobody’s in any hurry.
One really interesting feature is that part of the pub doubles as a small village shop, selling things like homemade bread. As it turns out, it’s the same bread they use in the kitchen. I had the sausage sandwich made with sausages from a local butcher and it was excellent. Plenty of perfectly cooked onions piled in there as well, which in my opinion is exactly how a sausage sandwich should be done.
The chilli fries were excellent too and perfect for sharing alongside the sandwiches.
The barman who served us was brilliant, very friendly and welcoming, making sure we were comfortable without fussing.
What started as a fairly miserable morning ended up turning into a really nice little lunch date.
If you find yourself passing through Cocking, The Blue Bell is definitely worth stopping for.

Unicorn Inn
Heyshott, MidhurstReally good menu with fresh seasonal ingredients. My starter salad of figs with feta cheese and prosciutto was delicious and my husband relished the prawns with mango. For mains he was absolutely delighted with his steak and my linguine with mushrooms and courgettes was really tasty.

Comestibles
Comestibles, Red Lion St, MidhurstLovely cafe with many homemade treats. The breakfasts and lunches looked equally tempting (both were served whilst I visited). I felt like a guest in a neighbour’s cozy home. The locals steadily rolled through, which was fun to watch. I will definitely be back soon. Our coffee, tea, dessert and sandwich were all excellent & good value

The Country Inn
Severals Rd, Bepton, MidhurstWas in the area due to work, spotted this and popped in for a snack for the drive home - I was warned that the pickle and pork roll would make me never want to go back to regular sausage rolls, and oh boy they were right.
Last year I ate what was rated ‘the best sausage roll in England’ somewhere in London… this tops it EASILY.

Fratelli Italian Restaurant
4 West St, MidhurstWe had the best time at this restaurant whilst celebrating our honeymoon with our 20 month old daughter. The food is fantastic but what sets this place apart is the fantastic, family friendly service. They went the extra mile to make it a great experience, with thoughtful touches like offering to cool our daughter's food a bit first. We can't say how much we appreciated your kindness and welcome, thank you!

Cadence Cycle Club Cocking
The Old Dairy, Hilltop, Cocking, MidhurstI think we've visited 5 out of 6 of their cafés, sometimes for coffee and cake mid ride or walk, other times toasties with my 80 year old mum. This morning had their amazing porridge before starting a couple of walking on the South Downs Way. Can't recommend them highly enough. Their business model (great food and drinks, but also building a community) will hopefully guarantee they're around for many more years to come. P.S. I also absolutely love their cycling jerseys

The Royal Oak
Oaklands Ln, West Lavington, MidhurstWe went here for a Sunday Roast based off the reviews and it did not disappoint. I ordered the medium beef and my partner ordered the roast pork. Both were unreal, with the pork being slightly ahead due to the crackling. You get a generous serving of vegetables and cauliflower with it, and is very filling. Highly recommend the service, pub and food! Will be back in the summer to enjoy the garden.
