Visited for the first time last Saturday. We were a large party comprising 6 children and 8 adults including 1 vegan, 1 vegetarian, 1 nut allergy and 1 fat free. All our dietary requirements were met and the food was delicious. The service was attentive without being intrusive and the 1 mistake (2 missing sides) was quickly remedied with an apology from the owner as well. The surprise birthday cake was served with a smile. All in all an excellent evening and I will definitely return when my diet is back to normal although making a choice might be difficult!

I came in for a Sunday roast with my family and could have spent the whole evening there. It was so relaxed and comfortable. The staff were nice and pretty helpful when it came to the kids and food choices etc. The best part was the food though. Omg the pork crackling was divine. Like crack for foodies. I tried both the pork and chicken roasts, which were lovely. Unusual veg combo, but it went down well with everyone at the table and i have to saybi preferred it to the usual cabbage (?). My son had the burger which was also amazing. Double burgers make 10yo boys so happy - who knew?

What a place! What a family! After having had a long drive down from the Lake District to attend an interview at another hotel only to arrive and find it closed and nobody answering the phone we turned around and started to head home in the hope of finding somewhere to put our heads down. We searched on Google and found this gem of a place. Initially stopped for some food but decided to ask if they had any rooms available as it wasnt showing any availability on Booking.com. They sorted us out with a lovely clean, quiet double with a comfy bed and fabulous shower. We ate our evening meal (can recommend the stroganoff and the steak) went to crash. Had a great sleep, woke refreshed and after meeting more of the family at breakfast, which was also great, it set us up for the long drive back up north. We can only thank you once again for helping us out last minute. We will definitely be calling again if back in the area.

Been coming here on and off for years with my best friend and never had a bad meal. Service is really nice and food arrives in good time. The dinner we had wasn’t just a meal for two, it was a real experience. Only 7 (out of a maximum of 8) people gathered round a chefs cooking table. We had a lovely sommelier explain the wines that went with the meal and the chef explained each course - where the ingredients were sourced and how he cooked it. It tasted amazing and we were so full after. We were celebrating a birthday but look for any excuse to visit this place, you won’t regret it.

After a period of time out of town I was very much looking forward to a roast on Sunday at The Compasses. Robin, Graham, Kim and the rest of the team were wonderfully welcoming and helpful.

The roast was, hands down, the best I have had. Perfect beef, cheesy cauliflower, rich red wine gravy and a superb Yorkshire pudding. Could not fault a thing. And at £16.25 it’s splendid value too!

Decent pub with decent beers, I’ve come in a few times this year and the choices are good with rotating guest beers. Most of the staff are very efficient and nice (although sadly there is one who can be a bit of an acquired taste depending on what mood they are in).
Special mention to the Scottish guy who is exactly what you want in a bar person - efficient, friendly and calm, no matter how snowed under.

There is a little cellar venue which seems to put on a variety of different live acts (although we’ve not been to one…yet).

The main thing that lets this place down is the clientele. Early seems fine albeit with a staggering amount of people playing videos and tik tocks loudly from their phone speaker (including staff sometimes) which I personally find extremely rude and off putting. Perhaps it does not bother others so much?
Later in the evening seems to be a very young crowd who are clearly imbibing large amounts of cocaine or other similar substances. Rowdy and sometimes intimidating if you’re an older person or even just someone who does not partake in that sort of thing.
Overall a good pub but we sometimes will go somewhere else depending on what the other customers are getting up to. Appreciate that it’s a tricky thing to control though.
