The quality of the food and the care and attention to detail with which the all pastries are prepared and served is fantastic. There are frequently unusual (and very delicious) specials ... I can't recommend Presto too highly!

For years Maidenhead was a bit of desert for decent craft beer. You might have got the odd local ale at Off the Tap or The Maiden's Head, and of course there was always the Spoons for cheap & cheerful[?]. But then A Hoppy Place extended from its Windsor base, and craft beer fans rejoiced. A fantastic selection of beer (and other drinks) in a great atmosphere, under the direction of a lovely couple in Dave and Naomi. They've worked hard to make their passion a profitable business and deserve every success. I don't pop in as often as I should, and I need to have a word with myself because I'm lucky to have a business like this on my doorstep and I really want it to thrive. If you are seeking out top-drawer independent beer in Maidenhead, it has to be A Hoppy Place.

What makes a good restaurant?

Clearly food will feature somewhere on your list and in the case of The Waterside this takes the form of classic French cooking. Nothing is “deconstructed” or designed to surprise. You know exactly what you’re getting from the menu and if you’ve visited previously you probably even know what you’re going to order before you arrive. Nothing is intended to shock.

Far too many restaurants at all levels feature a talented kitchen team let down by their front of house. From the moment you arrive here everyone knows what they are doing and wants to make your visit as enjoyable as they possibly can. They’re not trying to trip you up, you don’t have to be fluent in gastronomy or know anything about malolactic fermentation. The sommelier is there to help, not to test. No one is judging you although I’d be lying if said we didn’t people watch our fellow diners a little.

You are family when dining at The Waterside, it’s not in any way stuffy or starched. That’s not to suggest service is casual, seamless would be my best description with teams assembling when required to reveal your next course before melting away again to leave you to your conversation. The Waterside is a happy place.

My memory of the venue is that it’s a bit dated, the phrase “Chinese restaurant” was used as we drove there but things have quietly evolved. It’s actually quite smart these days. The bathrooms are modern and fresh, the soft furnishings crisp and comforting with a nod to the history of the venue. Let us not forget this is an institution woven into the fabric of British restaurant history.

We had breakfast at Bakedd Artisan Bakery & Café and everything was absolutely delicious, fresh, and full of flavour. The tea and coffee were amazing and made perfectly. My husband and I are staying in Maidenhead this week. We decided to take a walk in the Maidenhead Thicket on Saturday. Looking at the map we saw we could walk to this pub so decided to make it a lunch date as well after a recommendation from a local we met in the park. We didn’t have a reservation but were seated promptly. I decided to try two starters (soup of the day & the tandoori chicken) and hubby had the steak and ale pie. All were really good and just the right portions. I hope we get to go back before we leave. Great atmosphere too!

Excellent food and good portion for what you pay for too. No complaints apart from location, hard to find and not available parking nearby unless you park in the main car park for Maidenhead town. We picked The White Hart at random as somewhere to stop overnight in our motorhome on the way home from a 3-month trip around Europe. What a good decision that turned out to be! The Indian food is just superb - very possibly the best we've ever had. Amazingly good value too, especially for that part of the world. The staff were really friendly & welcoming. We were lucky enough to find Prema’s takeway service in 2022 and have been regular customers ever since. We love the variety of flavour packed dishes that you just don’t find anywhere else. The ingredients are top quality, mostly locally sourced and Prema even grows some veg herself! We can’t praise enough.

The Fat Duck is an exceptional restaurant we had a really great time.

Many of the dishes are famous so for a lot of guests there’s no surprises but you will still really appreciate the dishes as they very much taste as you would imagine them. The standard of cooking is extremely high and this is mixed with fun and invention.

The pace of the service was on point and our drinks pairing was fabulous as well as immaculately served up in the most precise way.

It is also the type of restaurant that goes out of it's way to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies, we don't have any but you could tell they make every effort to accommodate most people.

Would we come back? Yes absolutely.

Somethings that could be improved.
The tasting menu - like many other high end restaurants- suffers from lacking enough carbs and people don’t really want to address this by filling up with bread. This can mean that many eaters still feel hungry and though this could be helped by increasing some portion sizes, the main culprit is the lack of carbs on the menu. The most satisfying tasting menus will make people feel well fed before dessert and happier about their experience bearing in mind how much they are paying. Maybe it feels like the type of menu that makes it difficult to integrate carbs into that feel suitable, but that’s an interesting puzzle and shows some space to evolve into. When people complain that they felt hungry after such a meal, they’re not missing the point, being old fashioned etc, they are absolutely right. A lack of carbs is the main gap here.

The only other thing is that we only had finally grated Truffles on our Walk in The Woods whilst this dish is widely presented with a few thin grated Truffle pieces too, this made us feel that this dish was missing something that we had paid for. The dish was still fantastic and we appreciate dishes will vary but it's a bit problematic when you have seen the dish before adorned with generous slices of Truffles which is a higher cost item, the use of which is reflected in the price.
