Restaurants in Kirkby Stephen
The Black Bull at Nateby
Nateby, Kirkby StephenWe enjoyed Sunday lunch here after being let down by a place with the same name in a nearby town. What a find this was! The young team of staff were welcoming and incredibly efficient. Our roasts were superb - even a gluten-free option was available - and so we all decided to have desserts, which were just as good. If we were in the area again, we'd definitely return.

The Black Swan
Ravenstonedale, Kirkby StephenWe recently spent 3 nights at The Black Swan. The service and all staff were lovely, nothing was too much trouble.
Our room was great. Large comfortable bed with perfect linen. Decent size en suite, again with good quality towels.
Breakfast and lunch menus were excellent but we struggled a little with the main evening menu, hearty and good value but a little stodgy for us. We do appreciate food is sourced locally and can, occasionally, limit what is available.
Overall, we would return, as the atmosphere in the hotel and location are both great.

The Bay Horse Winton
The Bay Horse, Winton, Kirkby StephenWe had a large table booking yesterday for a birthday meal.
Dave & the team were wonderful and the meal was delicious classic pub food - we understand why the cheese and onion pie is award winning.
Highly recommend a visit to the lovely quaint village.
The beer garden is also huge if you are lucky enough to get some sun as we did.
Thanks again!

The Taggy Man
4 Market St, Kirkby StephenNot eaten hear yet but definitely going to try one of their special pies? Lovely, friendly, comfortable pub and very dog friendly. My husband claims it serves the best bitter he's had in a long time and that's saying something. On holiday here for 2 weeks and making this our local?

Fat Lamb Country Inn
Crossbank, Ravenstonedale, Kirkby StephenGreat place for a nice quiet relaxing stay. Rooms are comfortable and clean. Breakfast choice and quality was superb as was the evening meal. Staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Being dog friendly was one of the main reasons we chose the Fat Lamb and ours were fussed over and made very welcome by everyone.

Century Chinese Restaurant
Market Square, Kirkby StephenWed had a long day riding bikes to Kirkby Stephen. We were very hungry. The fish and chip shop had just closed. The pub had stopped serving 5 minutes before their sign said. Across the square was a sign for a Chinese. Hmmm, I guess it would fill a hole but it's hard to find a good Chinese restaurant. But oh no, they're booked up this evening - dang it. But they'll check with the restaurant - hold tight! They can squeeze us in - yes. From the off, service was was cheery, no nonsense, with a smile. Drinks and food ordered in a nice atmosphere. Then the food. Remember, it's hard to find a decent Chinese restaurant... But here one is. Starters of chicken wings and spring rolls beautifully hit, fresh and crispy with actual flavour as described, not generic and indistinguishable.
Mains - Szechuan Beef and Black Bean beef. Tender soft beef, fresh crispy vegetables and again, flavoursome fresh sauce. Rice - and chips (because bikes).
I would wholeheartedly recommend Century for any Chinese food sceptic or doubter. Really delicious, and great friendly service. Would love to return.

The Old Forge
39 North Rd, Kirkby StephenWhat an amazing spot. We stayed close by for a weekend and decided to eat in The Old Forge. We booked ahead for a 'pierrade' and wasn't disappointed. Plenty of food and effort taken to ensure we were happy. The place itself is cosy and intimate and the owners are wonderful, as are the clients, all appeared to live locally, were warm, inviting, pleasant and decent... A few were even funny! We enjoyed the atmosphere so much that we stayed after dinner, until closing, and had a wonderful evening of talking and laughing with all the patrons. I couldn't recommend this place more and would be over the moon if this was my local. Have been considering moving to the area to make it so! Great pub, good selection on draught, great team, professional and friendly. Keep up the great work.

Allison's Cafè
New Rd, Kirkby StephenWe needed a travel break on our way to Scotland - and found this little gem! (We did try another establishment before but they were full and we are glad we ended up at Allison’s) Bacon baguette, chips, hot chocolate and pot of tea delicious and really reasonably priced. The lady (sorry can’t remember your name) who served us was really friendly - shame you are over three hours from us :) Thank you for refuelling us on our pit stop.

The Mango Tree
27 Market Square, Kirkby StephenReally had a great evening. Food well presented and very tasty. Lots of choices on the menu. Reasonable prices. Proprietor was aware of food sensitivity and advised on ingredients. Have been once before a few years ago but would definitely return if I was in the area. Could recommend the merlot wine.
