We came in for lunch and drinks as were visiting family and Yates was recommended to us by a family member. We had a really nice meal and drinks and the bar and seating was lovely and spacious.
We were served by Rosie who I believe was the manager, she was very knowledgeable about the drinks and recommended several options which we very much enjoyed ? She then checked several times that everything was ok and was just lovely….so friendly and personable. I have experienced mediocre service before elsewhere so it was just so refreshing to be served by someone like Rosie who obviously takes pride in what she does.
Meals were fresh and hot and it was just a really good and relaxing experience. We will definitely visit again when we come to Colchester and recommend you to friends and other family. Thanks so much.

As part of a members’ deal, we all went for the £28 meal combo that included a starter, main, and dessert, which offered decent value considering the usual prices.\n\nFor starters I had hot dough balls, comforting choice. For mains, we each picked our own pizzas, and desserts included cake and brownies. The food overall was okay: it tasted good, came at the right temperature, and was presented decently, nothing particularly standout, but nothing disappointing either.\n\nService was where things dipped a little. Although our server made an effort to be polite, there was a clear sense of fatigue, perhaps the end of a long shift. The pace was slower than expected given how quiet the restaurant was, and there wasn’t much warmth in the interaction, which slightly affected the overall vibe.\n\nThe atmosphere was subdued. When we arrived, there were only a few other tables occupied, and by the time we left, we were the only ones there. The noise level was minimal, and the ambience felt a bit flat, definitely not buzzing with energy.\n\nPricing leaned toward the steeper side, averaging £30–£35 per person. For what we received, it wasn’t unreasonable, especially with the deal, but it still felt like a splurge for a casual meal.\n\nWould I return? Possibly, but next time I’d aim for an earlier visit, when the staff is fresher and the restaurant has a bit more life. The food did its job, but the overall experience might be better when the energy in the room is a bit higher.

He clearly paid attention to my notes, and I appreciate him taking the time to find the correct spot instead of driving around like some other drivers do. The food quality was outstanding, with no grease in sight. The chicken tikka masala was bursting with flavor, and it was refreshing to have it prepared this way rather than in a thick, creamy sauce. The onion bhajis and vegetable samosas were also delicious and, once again, not greasy. Additionally, we received complimentary poppadoms and drinks, which was a lovely gesture. We love this place. We invited some friends to join us for a meal in the Alma because we knew it to be a good choice having pre booked with them on WhatsApp.
Its a lovely cozy country pub with friendly welcoming staff. There is enough choice on the menu to satisfy different tastes, reasonably priced and a good selection of beverages from the bar.
We all chose something different to eat and, apart from a few salad leaves, nothing else was left on our plates. We were all feeling a little bit to full for the puddings deciding on icecream and coffees for afters. It was all delicious.

I used this Chip Shop weekly on a Thursday for a big work order. Billy on the till is fantastic. He is able to take the massive order and has never gotten it wrong so far ? The shop makes sure to prep for the lunch order we put in to make it quicker for us and the food is always pukka quality. Nindy's is an amazing fish and chip shop, and their sandwich/baguette bar is incredible also. It's definitely worth a visit if you're close by and fancy a bite to eat.

We have ordered from Kelvedon King on a few occasions, mainly because the food, portion sizes and staff are amazing. We had a couple of drinks missing from our order and the delivery man went to the nearest shop and got us our drinks and a couple of extras just in case. They cannot do enough for you. It’s is hands down our favourite takeaway!!!

Probably the friendliest staff in the world. We arrived late on Sunday, dripping wet from the rain, leaving a puddle behind us on the floor and yet the lady was welcoming, chatty and helpful. Food was freshly cooked, good quality and great value. Highly recommend.

Dropped into this little gem just on passing by after a long walk by the river. The pub was lovely fantastically clean and very friendly. Had a really good sandwich and chips in here with a cider. The upstairs open part was really nice. And would highly recommend this lovely pub. They even gave out cutters with the sachets of condiments, which I thought was a great idea. Thank you for the great service ?

No questions the best kebab in town, and easily my favourite meal in town.

Their lamb kebab is genuinely divine, a gift from the gods. I am nothing but grateful to have had it grace my taste buds. Its proper shawarma meat, chunks of lamb, not some amalgamation meat puck. Its juicy and tender, perfectly cooked every time.

The workers are very polite and inviting.

Love the Friar. The staff and landlords are all lovely friendly smashing people. The beer is always good. The pub always has a buzz about it. Over weekends the place is generally very busy, with plenty to amuse you. From darts, pool, slot machines, and sky. Even if you are a stranger you are somehow made to feel welcome. Occasionally some weekends there is live music. Highly recommended as a local which concentrates on its customers and not food as this is a none eating establishment. Thank you. Highly recommended.
