The Hoebridge

Gattonside, Melrose

We had an awesome dinner at The Hoebridge. The dishes were delicious and executed with finesse and style. The service and atmosphere are relaxed but on point, and the dining room is paired back and cosy. As we were both not drinking we had excellent non-alcoholic cocktails. The dessert we had was simply amazing, a chocolate, hazelnut and salted caramel triumph. We will definitely be back again as it's simply the best in the area.

Poped In here for my breakfast this morning. Got one of if not the best baguettes in my whole life. Periperi chicken, some jalapeño, peppers, lettuce & cheddar cheese. With a caramel latte. After telling the guy my plans he charged my phone & even donated a meal for my lunch. This picked me up. And showed me that just one small act of kindness can make your whole trip worth every minute. I didn't get the guys name. But he was not the owner. I hope I don't get him in trouble. But hjs boss needs to give him a raise lol thank you man blessVegetarian options: LotsDietary restrictions: LotsKid-friendliness: VeryWheelchair accessibility: Yup

Stopped in Melrose on our way back to Edinburgh after a trip. The Melrosian salt beef bagel I had here may have been the best sandwich I’ve ever had in my life! Incredible. We will probably plan a day out just to come back here ?

Abbotsford The Home Of Sir Walter Scott

J62C+46 Abbotsford House, Melrose

My visit to Abbotsford was a happy coincidence as I was driving from Edinburgh to Carlisle, spotted a brown sign for the property and remembered the Walter Scott ownership. My principal motivation to visit was knowledge of Queen Victoria’s love for the highlands that was inspired by Scott’s Waverley novels. I was keen to learn a bit about the man and his literary works. I was delighted to discover that my dog could accompany me into the garden, and later discover that she could be off the lead except in specifically signed locations, eg children’s playground. She was even welcome in the restaurant! What an enlightened dogs policy, and I made a point of complimenting several staff members about it. Visiting in December, and after a recent snowfall, there wasn’t a great deal to see in the garden but I had a lovely walk around it, imagining how splendid it must look in the spring or summer. I didn’t go in the house (I shall leave that pleasure for a future visit) but I did have lunch in the restaurant, accompanied by my four-legged companion. I ordered a haggis roll and was delighted by its quality and flavour - easily the best haggis I encountered on my holiday. Of the Abbotsford that I was able to experience under a blanket of snow, I loved it and will definitely return at some juncture.

Simply Delicious has a wonderful selection of Ice Cream, Chocolates, Sweets, cakes and Hot and Cold drinks. The presentation of the shop is absolutely beautiful and the prices are very reasonable. The coffee was very nice and the Millionaires Shortbread is the best I've ever had. The lady serving in the shop was friendly and professional.

Looking for a better standard of takeaway after a disappointing experience we noticed Seasons whilst driving past and looked it up, interesting. We ordered from the ‘At Home ‘ menu as we were staying locally and were not disappointed this time The ordering process and pick up went as planned with the restaurant being quite helpful in the timings for pick up if we needed it due to traffic. Dishes came in oven ready containers with instructions (Timings) Starters of Pigeon and also their Scallops were great before a main for two of the Fish and Seafood Gratin which maintained the high standard with ease. A new way of doing takeaway for us and one we will look to repeat

Old Melrose Estate & Holiday Cottages

Old Melrose Estate, Melrose

Returned recently from a week in the East Tweed cabin. You can book by using the link in the “Overview” section. That has really good (and accurate) pictures of all (I think just four at the moment with only the other timber cabin nearby) the cottages including the one we stayed (East Tweed). The pictures give an accurate impression of what the place looks like inside and out. The only difference is that the owners have listened to guest feedback and added a porch over the part of the deck outside the front door (see photo). It’s a great addition which meant we were able to change boots etc there sheltered from the rain. Will provide a good bit of a shade in hotter times I’m sure for sitting out.We were there when it was single digit temps outside and often rainy. But we were more snug than in our own relatively modern, well-heated home. It has good electric heating on a central thermostat as well as the log burner. The bathroom floor is also electrically heated so always felt nice. Rest assured that you can enjoy this place at any time of the year. And once the log burner is going that provides all the heat needed. The cabin is equipped to a high standard throughout. Very comfortable bed, good quality bedding, pillows, duvet etc. Lovely bathroom, well-equipped kitchen. It’s also been built with great care – incredible quality windows and sliding doors to keep it snug. Pitch black at night.Owner Frankie stopped by to welcome us with home made bread, brownies, jam, honey and apple juice from the grounds as well as a couple of lovely fresh eggs from the hens which peck about around 100 yards away. All delicious. William popped in later in the week to make sure all was well. We felt very welcomed as well as being left in peace. The setting is lovely with a view out front over a piece of pasture and then the trees edging the Tweed beyond. There’s a glimpse of the A68 roadbridge and the Tweed through a a gap in the trees in one direction. There’s just the one other cabin a short distance away. A little further is the building which houses the tea room and a farm yard type area. We didn’t get any disturbance from this. We saw the cubs and scouts a couple of times, but they were quickly passing through on the way to their hut a little further away in the grounds. In the parking area it’s possible to hear the road a little depending on wind direction, but this is not audible inside and on the deck you can only occasionally hear it very faintly as it’s more sheltered by the landscape and trees. The overriding impression is of tranquility. The grounds are a treat. You are made welcome to roam and explore. We trotted down to the river and around on the first morning spotting a cormorant and a heron. An egret flew over and there were plenty of rowdy ducks. A couple of deer made their way unbothered across the pasture outside the cabin.Owner William will challenge you to spot otters and owls whilst there too although I’m sorry to say I think we were being a bit too lazy to get up early/stay up late enough. Ospreys have nested on the estate in the last couple of years. We hope to see them on our next visit.I could go on, but will simply say that we had already booked to go back in spring before we’d left. Most unlike us to rebook the same place again. We were only vaguely familiar with the area mainly from passing through and maybe stopping quickly en route else, but we enjoyed it. We visited Hawick, had a lovely walk from Newtown over to Dryburgh, the William Wallace statue and then on to Scott’s View (where you can look back on the estate and its lovely bend in the Tweed. Melrose was a pleasant surprise being both pretty and well-furnished with interesting shops. We also popped into Edinburgh using the excellent train which runs from Tweedbank (8-10 mins drive away) and takes about an hour (~£10 return) to Waverley Station in the centre of the city. Kelso, Jedburgh, and Selkirk are all very close by.

This was a delightful find in Melrose. A charming chef/manager and his waitressing daughter clearly love what they do. The salmon was cooked to perfection with a truly amazing sauce. Lovely atmosphere with peaceful jazz music in the background. We left enchanted.
