The Shore Restaurant
13-14 Alverton St, PenzanceChefs are usually far to busy to venture from their kitchens to the front of the house, but at The Shore in Penzance, the irrepressible Bruce Rennie has no choice, since he runs the restaurant single-handedly. And boy! Does he run it in style!\n\nThe set-up is for guests to sit at a communal table which can accommodate a maximum of ten diners. The night we were there there were only four of us. This gives the occasion the atmosphere of an intimate dinner party. Bruce greets you, seats you, and then explains how things will work. The menu varies from day to day, depending on what ingredients are freshest and seasonal. But suffice to say, you will be presented with the freshest of Newlyn-caught fish and other local ingredients, all from trusted suppliers or, indeed, from Bruce’s own garden and polytunnel. \n\nBruce announces each course and explains the choice of fish in the dish and why he has prepared it with the various, ingenious, and delicious flavour combinations. He even knows the name of the boat that caught the fish! \n\nWe kicked off with Bruce’s freshly baked bread, which he serves with his own cultured and churned butter, which is above and beyond necessity, but which is absolutely delicious. Our tasting menu continued with dishes where the star ingredients were, in order: line-caught squid, blue fin tuna, oysters, smoked fish with mussels, hake, and, finally bass. And for pud, a lemon sorbet, followed by a lemon “cheesecake”, made with Bruce’s home-grown Cornish lemons!\n\nWe also had the wine flight to accompany each dish. Bruce gives his rationale for the choice of each wine to accompany each dish. He is clearly an oenophile, because every choice was excellent, and I recommend choosing the flight to maximise the dining experience.\n\nBruce’s knowledge of and explanation of his taste choices is superb and is a real complement to the meal. How he manages to juggle running one of the country’s finest kitchens with his front of house performance is a mystery to me. But long may he continue to do so. If you are in Cornwall you simply must give his restaurant a visit!

The Turks Head
49 Chapel St, PenzanceThere are a lot of pubs in Penzance - this is the best and if we lived here we’d make this our local. \n\n4 of us visited with 2 dogs, one the size of a small pony, for Sunday lunch, good to see it was nice and busy and we probably got the last unreserved table. To avoid disappointment it probably makes sense to book ahead. The team were great from the off, took our drinks order and brought them to our table, brought a bowl of water for the dogs. Our roasts were really tasty, plenty of meat and the cheesy leaks were awesome. Big shout out to the gravy too, made from beef dripping. Puds were offered but we were full.\n\nCannot recommend this pub highly enough.

45 Queen Street
45 Queen St, PenzanceTried oysters for the first time here and I am glad I did! It was a fantastic experience.
We got the half dozen, which offers two of each variety of their oysters (great for a couple) and saves £4 compared to ordering them individually. Purists will probably laugh at me but you MUST try the baked oyster in spicy tartare sauce. Absolute banger!
They have two happy hours where the drinks are £5 each but do take a proper look at the menu for a better idea of what’s on offer.
The service is friendly and welcoming and it seems the staff are very familiar with the locals, so if you’re a tourist you might find they half expect you to know how everything works. They’re not eager to seat you or let you know you should order at the bar.
Love how dog friendly this place is!

Admiral Benbow
46 Chapel St, PenzanceAnyone visiting Penzance in Cornwall should be sure to stop by The Admiral Benbow. I’ve been there several times, and it never disappoints. It’s not just a pub serving fantastic food – including an outstanding fish pie – but also a place with a historic atmosphere that makes your visit truly memorable. Inside, I saw genuine nautical artefacts from Cornish shipwrecks: from cannons and diving helmets to figureheads. The waitress told me that The Admiral Benbow inspired author Robert Louis Stevenson to write Treasure Island. A real must for anyone who wants to experience the seafaring history of Cornwall while enjoying delicious traditional pub fare.

Alverne Restaurant & Lounge
30 Alverton St, PenzanceWe had a wonderful vegetarian meal here yesterday. Miso fondant potatoes with roasted cauliflower, Madiera glaze, cauliflower puree and crispy chilli oil. Not too expensive and way more imaginative then the usual burger or curry that so often are the afterthought go to meals for vegetarians. I don't think it could be improved. Service impeccable as always.

Artist Residence Clubhouse
20 Chapel St, PenzanceHad the most amazing meal there for my husbands birthday. From start to finish it was a lovely experience. The atmosphere is relaxing, the decor is just the right side of eclectic, and the staff are very friendly and attentive without hovering. They understand the menu and could recommend accordingly. The food was delicious. For starters we had the Cornish crab nachos - which sounded like an odd combination but we fancied trying it - which were surprisingly tasty, worked really well together, and very generous. We also had the smoked ribs which had a strong smoked flavour and quite a piquant sauce, they were extremely tasty. For mains we had the duck - it fell off the bone and was mouthwatering - and the special of sea bass - which was cooked to perfection with a super crisp skin but moist and juicy flesh. Even the chips were spectacular- possible the crispiest chips we’ve ever eaten. We didn’t have room for desert, but the ones we saw being brought out looked delightful. We passed our compliments on to the chef (who I believe was called Gareth) and had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Highly recommend people trying it.

Little India
52 Market Jew St, PenzanceBeen to this place and reviewed it before when I have been on holiday in the area.\nHandy location close to Penzance railway station and the very pricey Harbour car park.\nPlace is a BYO and no corkage charge so pop up to the Expresss shop up the road first.\nWent in early evening and just one other diner in the restaurant in the hour I was there.\nAs previously no price wall board outside ( which there should be ) , just a box with take away menus that are not the same price as charged inside for a sit down meal.\nSo you wont know what you are being asked to pay until you are sitting at a table.\nStarted with two papadoms and chutneys, £2.97.\nOn to a main of chicken rogan josh at £12.49. Very tasty and plenty of it. Had a naan bread at £2.99, arrives in a bowl cut in to sections.\nWent for it and had a side dish of sag paneer. Very tasty but £6.99 for a side dish ??!!\nIn my weeks Cornwall travels easily ranked as the highest priced sag paneer as a side dish in an Indian in this area of Cornwall.\nGot a bill of £25.44 the lot plus my own beer from up the road.\nPremises look clean and tidy, toilets OK and staff polite.\nSo give it a go but maybe boycott the sag paneer till the management get the message re their very optimistic pricing for this side dish !

The Boatshed
The Harbour, Wharf Rd, PenzanceI ate at the Boatshed twice during my stay, on the first evening I had the meat free burger but booked to go back on my final evening as I wanted to try the quinoa burger - my experience was equally great on both occasions and I'd definitely put the Boatshed on my list of places to eat again next time I'm in Penzance.\n\nI would say the quinoa burger was among the best vegetarian burgers I've ever had - as an idea they can be very variable depending on the chef and these were first rate, with a wide variety of pieces of vegetable mixed in (I'm pretty sure I spoted beetroot, yellow pepper and small broad beans in mine). Served with great chips, and peas which were done to exactly the right degree.\n\nThe service was great, on both occasions - exactly the right balance between being on top of spotting when a diner needed something and letting alone.

I love everything about Lovetts, it’s such an asset to the community & I always know I’m going to have a delicious experience. The toasties are obscene in the best possible way. The warm banana bread is a go-to. And I’ve even been impressed with the matcha which has been very hard to find in Cornwall. But it’s truly the coffee that has my heart. N Cliff, Mousehole, PenzanceVisited for brunch as a group of 4 adults and a 3yo. We all had either small or regular Cornish breakfasts and a few breakfast items for our daughter. The food itself was pretty good however we felt the hogs pudding lacked flavour compared to what we have previously had elsewhere. Also at £15 for the regular breakfasts and the cost of a few individual items for a child we felt that it wasn't quite as good value for money as other places we have visited due to the size and quantity of breakfast items included. Service was excellent and the staff we met were incredibly friendly and helpful.

Mounts Bay Pasty Company
8 Market Jew St, PenzanceAbsolutely outstanding pasties.
We are a family of pasty connosours ? For over 35 years we have been visiting Cornwall, staying in Hayle and therefore we are big fans of the famous Philps Bakery.
Today we visited Mounts Bay Pasty Company in Penzance.
We were welcomed by two really friendly ladies, one who had not long returned from maternity leave (sorry didn't catch your name)
We purchased two standards, a steak and stilton, a lamb and mint and a sausage roll. These came with free doughnuts and cookies!
I have to say, these are outstanding and I have to say, they even beat Philps! The pasty was so tasty and buttery but not too flaky. Really fairly priced and so delicious I don't know which I liked the best.
We will almost certainly be back!

The Mexico Inn
4 Riverside, Longrock, PenzanceWhile visiting Cornwall recently we looked for somewhere to enjoy a Sunday Lunch . After doing a bit of research we found the Mexico Inn . We booked for a Sunday lunch the first weekend we were on holiday, we found on arrival that there is very limited on street parking so headed for the nearby Longrock car park. The parking charges are very reasonable and it is only a five minute walk back to the Inn. After browsing the menu we all opted for the beef brisket Sunday lunch although there were many tempting alternatives on the menu and specials board . The roast was a generous portion was really delicious. We just about had space for pudding but couldn’t decide on what to pick , solution, The Mexico Inn do a sharing board with all their puddings to share ! These were as excellent as the main course . We would highly recommend coming here for lunch but best book as it gets very busy . We enjoyed it so much we came back the second Sunday of our holiday for the same again !

The Cornish Oven - Penzance
Jelbert Way, PenzanceJust bought and ate 5 pasties. 2 Flaky pastry steak, 2 Cheese and vegetable, and one short crust steak. General opinions in the family are that this is top tier delicious as good as anything you'll have anywhere pasties.
The flaky pastry was crisp and delicious, a stand out alteration to the regular short crust. But the filling was also top notch. The steak was delicious and generous, less peppery than many other pasties but in no way disappointing. For me, maybe my favourite Cornish pasty ever. The cheese pasties basically just substitute cheese for steak and I stole a taste and they were really good.
If you're in this part of the world, make the detour to this stonking good pasty shop.
There are cakes and sausage rolls and drinks available too, but this is just a straight up pasty review. 10/10, 5/5, 100/100.

There’s sometimes a wait but to be expected when ordering freshly prepared cuisine! Thank you… set meals are good value and a great way to have a mix of different menu choices!

Morrisons
Eastern Way, Longrock, PenzanceHad excellent support from a worker in customer services kiosk called Mandy Hutchens. She went the extra mile sorting out my more card credit after my card failed to work in store at the time of payment. She was patient and diligent and very responsive to the issue. I made a point of returning the next day to ask her name as I was so impressed. Thank you Mandy.

Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar
New Rd, Newlyn, PenzanceWOW, best Seafood we have had. Get in the queue.... it's worth the wait.
We had about 20-30 people in front of us, but because we were only a table of 2 we got a table within 10 minutes.
We has the Lemon Sole, Crab Salad, Tiger Prawns and Battered Haddock.
Everything was absolutely amazing.
We also had the Lemon Posset between the two of us, again delicious.
We will definitely return next year when we are visiting the area.

Mousehole Deli & Kitchen

1 Victoria Square, PenzanceProper drinking pub.\n\nAs many of the other reviews point out, this is a great backstreet boozer. Found it on a holiday trip with family and stayed for an enjoyable hour.\n\nAbout 20 people in there, most seemed local, all were well lubricated, not in a massive night out way but more a, normal day in the pub way.\n\nNon threatening, good range of drinks. Liked it.

19 Quay St, PenzanceExcellent Chinese in Penzance. We were walking around trying to find a place to eat and came across sea palace. They made room for us and made us very welcome. Dylan looked after us and suggested a really nice chicken dish when I couldn't decide what to have. 4 drinks arrived including Sunlik and tiger beer, super fast and the food was not far behind. We had prawn crackers, special rice, salt and pepper chips, sizzling fillet steak, gaunpow (sp) chicken and sweet and sour Cantonese chicken. All the food was amazing and the staff were great especially Dylan. If back in Penzance we would definitely go back.
