Fetherston Arms Hotel
The Square, PenrithI can't think of a better all round pub than the Fetherston Arms. The food is of a very high standard and hits the table piping hot. Not microwave hot, properly cooked through hot. The food is obviously freshly cooked just before delivery to the table, not prepared in advance and kept in a hot plate. The portions are generous without being over facing and the presentation is really good as well .Service from entering the pub, throughout the whole dining experience is great without being intrusive, and did not feel like a bored, routine approach. The pies are the star for me, but there are many excellent dishes across the menu. The only challenge in Kirk Oswald is parking, but do not let that put you off.Make the effort to visit, you won't regret it.

Blue Bell Inn
Newbiggin, Heads Nook, BramptonCome for the chips alone!!Off the beaten track, small, local pub with a very warm welcome, some great local beers and outstanding food. The standard of cooking was excellent and the portion sizes were very generous. Everything was very tasty, with really nice quality ingredients, but the star of the show were the chips... exactly like your mum used to make. Highly recommended if you're in the area. You can book ahead to avoid disappointment.

Fox & Pheasant Inn
Front St, Armathwaite, CarlisleLovely food with great presentation. The staff were lovely too. My only let down was that the Mixed berry pavlova on the desert menu was definitely not pavlova - the presentation was nice but it was only meringue nests with ice cream

The Crown Inn
B6413, B6413, Kirkoswald, PenrithAbsolutely first class meal. Good range of options on the menu and specials board. Given the excellence of the food, we felt the prices were reasonable. I had prawns in garlic butter to start followed by braised ox cheeks and both courses were delicious. The cheesecake dessert was a lovely homemade affair. My wife had the cod goujons, lamb curry and chocolate brownie and thought all three as excellent.Parking: Kirkoswald is a small village with two busy pubs, so it can be difficult to find a place to park.
