The Jumble Room
Langdale Rd, Grasmere, AmblesideWe didn't realise a table was so highly in demand but luckily managed to fit in due to a cancellation, we found out why you need to book ahead! The menu was unique and worldly with both of our dishes being cooked to perfection. We sampled the cocktails which were equally amazing all set within a lovely atmosphere.

Tacos del sol Ltd
2a Cheapside, AmblesideI came here with my friend last week and I cannot put into words how much I love and recommend this place. I’m a hispanic exchange student studying in the UK for the semester and have been craving authentic mexican food. I happened to stumble upon this place before a hike and I am so glad I went back after. The service and food was to die for and made fresh/authenticity. Both the man working at the front and the woman cooking the delicious meals were so welcoming and lovely to chat with. I ordered the burrito, which tasted like something my grandma would make for me back home! I cannot recommend this place enough! Thank you for making me feel welcomed and reconnecting me with my cultures food so far away from home <3

Lake Road Kitchen
Lake Rd, AmblesideSuperb uncomplicated beautiful dishes, packed with flavour, a really well balanced tasting menu for £74 for 5 courses, Delicious crusty homemade sourdough with their own butter, we've not tasted better. Clean, fresh flavours from the starters, amazing powerful barbecued miso pork dish and intense double baked cheesecake with juma berry compote. Excellent wine pairing, sommelier and all the staff were immensely knowledgeable and friendly. A more relaxed and informal dining experience with less complicated intense dishes than the Old Stamp House but equally as tasty. My wife actually preferred this restaurant, so no better praise.

The Apple Pie Cafe and Bakery
Rydal Rd, AmblesidePopped into this cafe whilst on holiday for a spot of lunch, there was a queue which normally would put us off but so glad we did. OMG it was one of the best lunches ever had!!!! How can a simple toastie and salad taste sooooo good, and then there was the apple pie, it was like christmas in your mouth!! If in ambleside you MUST visit the cafe for your lunch, you wont regret it!! Yum yum ?

Jintana Thai Restaurant Ambleside
Compston Rd, AmblesideVery nice food. We will definitely go back. However, the seating arrangements were to suit the staff I think. Eg. a couple arrived and were placed right next to a noisy table of young lads who were drinking, when there was plenty of room to seat them elsewhere. Similarly a family asked to be moved because of this. The early-bird menu is good value.

Greggs
6 Market Cross, AmblesideDon't know why the rating is so low. I went to have lunch , there was a short line which gave me enough time to choose my order (Hot Chocolate and Stake Bake) which was lovely and the staff were really kind. I recommend getting the Greggs app as when you sign up there is a free hot drink to redeem.

Waterhead Coffee Shop
Borrans Rd, AmblesideWe had a stop off in Ambleside while doing the Walkers route from Windermere.Very busy cafe which has very little room to move but if you can take away or get a table outside I’d recommend. It has a great view over the lake and is right next to the ferry ports. We had the fruit crumble (the star of the show), ham and cheese and their tuna panini - all very good.No complaints other than no customer toilet on site.

Royal Oak
Church St, AmblesideLovely pub to dry off next to the roaring fire, especially as it's now got the Christmas decorations up! Serves the wonderful Goulash that has made the Dog & Gun a must visit location when in Keswick. When we discovered that pub was closed for refurbishment we had to make a trip to Ambleside to get our fix of Goulash. Nice selection of local beers.

Ambleside Fish & Chips
Waterhead, Amblesidewe ordered regular fish and chips for two people and it was cooked whilst we wait. The place was busy which is always a good sign and the food was delicious. They give you a buzzer that tells you when its ready so no need to hang around in the queue.

Ambleside Tavern
4 Millans Park, AmblesideWe called in here for a bite to eat and a drink after a quick walk up to Stock Ghyll Force waterfall. It's alot bigger than it looks from the outside and is dog friendly. Our food was good and they have a wide selection of exclusive beers on tap. The staff were very friendly so we couldnt understand why it wasn't busier than it was. This was better for us though as we got served quicker. We will definitely be calling back in next time we are in the area.

Best Restaurants

Matthew's Bistro
Compston Rd, AmblesideOne of the BEST places to eat in Ambleside! ❤️ I'm sad that we discovered this GEM of a Bistro on our last day in the Lakes. Such a lovely change from the hum-drum offering of pretty much every other restaurant, pub, or eatery around. The food is excellent and the service top-notch! Very reasonably priced as well as good-sized portions. The specials change regularly and offer even more selection to the extensive menu. Definitely will come here the next time we're in the area!

Sawrey House Hotel
Near Sawrey, AmblesideWe visited last weekend to entertain wedding guests. The management here are amazing, they go the extra meter to ensure everything is in place as the happy couple planned.Great working with them - just love good organisation. The function room would hold abou 80 guests. It has a low ceiling, and the atmosphere is good.Loading is via a patio, and a trolley is available - just ask.Parking is very good and well managed. My only gripe is the naff road on the west side of Windermere Lake, much prefer the A591.

The Old Stamp House Restaurant
Old Stamp House, The, Church St, AmblesideTruly lovely Birthday meal. Ryan and his staff were so personable and attentive. Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of food and ambience. First few courses could have come out a little slower...but didn't detract much from a fine culinary experience.

Fellinis Restaurant
Church St, AmblesideExcellent vegetarian restaurant with very good and friendly service. (I'm omnivorous and not overly keen on vegetarian food). I really enjoyed this meal altho the strawberry ice cream with the roasted plums didn't really gel. Decaff coffee too milky for my taste do ask for an extra shot. Well worth revisiting!

Sheila's Cottage
The Slack, AmblesideCame here in the evening with our two very tired dogs after a long walk in the day. The staff were very welcoming, all really friendly and our dogs were offered treats and water which was a nice touch! The food was fab, really hearty after a long day. Luigis
Kelsick Rd, AmblesideFriendly, informative, efficient staff.Food, fantastic through the whole meal (starter, main and dessert) happy and encouraged to customise the dishes to suit your taste.Unrushed service, but not left waiting for your food either. We opted for an earlier time to eat and took advantage of their happy hour deal, 3 courses for under £20, you do have to order a drink from the menu, but plenty of options available including soft drinks as well as tea or coffee, I can recommend this if your planning a visit here

Copper Pot
Church St, AmblesideDiscovered this hidden gem in April 2022 and found it so good that we returned twice more within the month and many more times since! The Lakeland Large 'Un full English breakfast is the best I've ever sampled, and I've had quite a few in various places over the years. It comes with everything, including an unusual take on the classic Cumberland "sausage" in the form of a chunky patty. The place itself affords inside and outside seating, is clean and uncluttered, and the staff are refreshingly polite and cannot do enough for you. They even offer cushions and blankets in case it's a little chilly outdoors. Simply the best place for breakfast in Ambleside, if not the whole Lake District!

Kysty
3/4 Cheapside, AmblesideA wonderful evening with top class food and excellent service. The staff were so helpful with food and wine choices for both one vegetarian and one meat eater. We would definitely recommend booking well in advance to anyone visiting Ambleside. Can’t wait to try the sister restaurant ‘The Stamp House’. Children on the next table, happy and content. Good atmosphere and chatty between tables. Good friendly ambience. Would recommend to all family and friends. Well deserving of our five stars.
